Every disaster brings calls for immediate help, not simply for money but also equipment. Shelterbox is a charity that was founded by Rotarian Tom Henderson of the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard, Cornwall in 2000 since then it has grown to be an international charity. At the heart of every Shelterbox is a ten-person tent. It is designed to withstand extreme temperatures, high winds and heavy rainfall. It contains equipment that is needed for an extended family of 10 to help them survive for six months. The equipment will vary according to where it is being sent but may include such things as thermal blankets, water purification equipment cooking utensils, tools and even a children's pack containing colouring books, crayons and pens. In the year of the Tsunami, 2005, over 22,000 boxes were distributed and in 2009 an estimated 14,000 boxes were dispatched. In the first half of 2010, as well as the 8000 or so boxes sent to Haiti, fresh demands have been made following the earthquake in Chile.
Past President Philip Woodman and members of the club have visited schools locally The children were amazed to see a tent that would house 10 people erected in their school halls and Philip showed them the rest of the contents of the box. They watched a short film showing how the Shelterboxes had been utilised in Haiti and then gave Philip a hard time asking him very searching questions.
Through donations from our own members, the public collections, publicity by the Sidcup Chronicle and with the contributions from these schools, Sidcup Rotary Club has so far been able to fund 28 Shelterboxes at £490 each since launching their appeal. Click here to access the Shelterbox website.
